Meet "Dan"

Cindy had parent-teacher conferences with Daniel today, and she learned something that I think the title of this blog probably already gives way. He calls himself Dan and has since the beginning of school. Everyone in his school only knows him as Dan. He is Dan.

Now I don't think this is as quite as radical as the 'Saul-on-the-Road-to-Damascus' level event that occurred the day Jimmy became James but still ...

He has never once referred to himself at home or church as Dan. So where did Dan come from?

  2. Matthew does want to be Matt. Someday I'll have to let him do it, but it's hard for me to give up my Matthew.

  3. In a new school it's easy to "change" something to fit in or to make a new start.. when I worked in a middle school last year we had a new kid with a very simular story.. when his mom asked him what made him "change" his nick name he told her.. everyone just assumed thats what I was called.. and I got tired of correcting them... so it happens for lots of reasons.. if he's ok with it.. I guess go with it!!!
    good luck

  4. Personally, I think the mom should be able to call her children what she wants; however, I also think the child has the right to make the choice about what he wants to be called. He just needs to be willing to answer to either one. In my mind, Daniel is Daniel and Matthew is Matthew. James can be James, but in my mind he is Jim (I have got over Jimmy).

  5. I remember throwing a fit when you called Melissa Missy. However, I think just about everyone of her friends, teachers, YW leaders, etc. all call her Missy. I guess we can't help it. I do find myself calling her Missy every once in a while. It was funny though when I saw on Jenna's HW she wrote her name Jenna followed by Boo in really small letters and then Gardner.

  6. My neighbor's son Danny changed his name to Dan when he went to college. He works for Papa now. I still call him Danny, but he wants to be all grown up. So, Dan it is. Daniel does sound like the name you use when he is in trouble, "Daniel Hatch get over here".
